"It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything." - Joseph Stalin
Boxing - hoax: a noun; something intended to deceive or defraud.
A fool and his money soon part ways. In the case of following Pacquiao-Mayweather, a gullible fan and his time soon part ways.
Here are five reasons to stop caring about this fight:
No. 1: All evidence points to Manny vs. Floyd not happening anytime within the next year. Fans have lives and should move on. Press the 'Next' button.
Priorities such as school, work and family take precedence over this debacle. It's empty talk. That's all it is.
William Shakespeare wrote that the root cause of suffering is false expectation. How many hours has each fight fan invested in this banter? Answer: countless hours.
YouTube: Beavis' false expectations
No. 2: Sports fans are being manipulated. Worse, millions are allowing themselves to be manipulated. The naive flock to the thief . . . and get slaughtered.
What are the signs of deception? The storyline changes every week. The excuses grow. The runarounds continue.
There's an old saying: 'Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.' According to psychology expert Pamela Meyer, if you constantly allow yourself to be lied to, you're the one at fault.
No. 3: You shouldn't waste time with people who are trying to manipulate you. Self-explanatory.
It's not just the boxing promoters. The media - tv networks, print newspapers, and online blogs - is squeezing every last advertising dollar off this old story. Nothing wrong with trying to make a living, but not at the expense of the public good.
The media is creating false expectations boxing won't deliver on.
No. 4: The 30-minute fight will be anti-climatic once it finally occurs. The styles of both fighters clashing in the ring point to a snoozer-fest. The pre-fight hype will be lively. Then comes the let down. Oh wait, it's not even happening.
Hype is not reality.
No. 5: There's other things going on in the sports world. We've got the Super Bowl coming up in February, the NBA championship coming up in June, the London 2012 Olympics in the summer, and baseball's World Series in October. And then there's UFC.
When old news calls, let it go to voicemail. It has nothing new to say.
