5 questions to ask when examining self-worth

True self-worth is based on inherent qualities not external or material possessions. (Morguefile/alvimann)The concept of self-worth involves your inner sense of value or worthiness as a person. In truth, you are already born with inherent worth as a spiritual being.

Over time, however, your views about what you deserve in life may be affected by self-destructive patterns of belief and behavior and external factors.

By examining your personal interpretation of self-worth, you can gain insight into subconscious patterns that may not be serving your highest good.

Part of your higher purpose involves owning responsibility and feeling independent, worthy, and deserving.

Consider the following five questions and the answers that first come to mind:

  1. Do you love yourself? - It is difficult for the world to show love, honor, and respect to someone who is not authentic in nurturing his or her own soul. Regardless of the state of your life -- the relationship you are in, your financial situation, your career choice, or the condition of your health -- you can love yourself. Actually, if you wish to improve any life area, you must love yourself and believe you are worthy of happiness.
  2. When challenged by a life problem, do you blame others then punt responsibility to someone else? - The way you handle or react to your own problems is reflective of your self-worth. Do you consider yourself a powerless victim? Do you relinquish control to someone more dominating, or do you ignore the problem in hopes that it will go away? By facing up to the situation your life is in and taking self-empowering steps, you can enhance your self-worth, reclaim control of your destiny, and create a more self-supportive life.
  3. Do you excessively engage in any activity? - Addictions to substances, poor habits, or even material objects can be a cover-up for low self-worth. People may substitute alcohol, money, or expensive clothes for a true sense of value in this world. They may be altogether denying their low self-worth or secretly wishing others will like them for the material things they have, thereby increasing a false sense of self-value.
  4. Do you feel like you contribute to society? - Have you ever volunteered your time for a particular cause? Do you donate unwanted items? Contributing in a healthy way to your community can increase self-worth. You can begin to feel a purpose, work toward a cause, and develop soulful connections to others. You learn to appreciate all that you are as an individual and humble yourself before all that you truly have.
  5. Do you compare your life progress to someone else's? - You are unique and live a very different life than another person in your family, at work, or in a social circle. Keep in mind that your own successes or failures should be viewed from the perspective of your own track record. Comparing yourself to others' accomplishments can create an unnecessary feeling of defeat. Look at where you now are from where you were 5, 10, or 15 years ago? Have you changed? Was it for the better or worse? Your self-worth is very personal and should not be dictated by someone else's path.

Affirmations: I do love myself! I make choices in my life that support me. I am worthy and deserve to receive good. I create the good in my life. I take responsibility for the successes and challenges in my life. I am empowered to evolve. I humbly express gratitude for the beautiful life that I am living.
