I may be dating myself but back when it was my first week of school my main focus was my outfits and if my TI-81 and pager had new batteries. As smart phones become increasingly advanced more apps are coming to market at an exponential rate. Now the must haves for back to school are apps and there is even a graphing calculator app; whoa. Here are some of my favorite new apps that are not only perfect for back to school but gives you geek bragging rights!
The Free Graphing Calculator app by William Jockusch is a free graphing calculator app that is the closest you will come to a scientific graphing calculator on your iPhone. The days of buying the TI-83 may be coming to an end; it’s one of the most useful apps and I am not even in calculus anymore. My only gripe is the ads but if you pay $.99 you can remove them.
Pling messenger allows you to communicate with other Pling users via walkie talkie instead of texting. Brilliant Pling! Any excuse to use my walkie talkie slang is awesome. Break 1-9 what’s your handle? Pling is a pretty neat app just import your contacts, select your contact, press and hold to begin your chat. I think it’s also pretty cool to play back the conversation after it took place.
Dorm life means there will be times where you will be alone on campus walking back from class or from a friends place at night. You can Fight is the first self-defense instructional app designed specifically for women created by a woman, Helen Anzalone Gordon, a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. The You can Fight app is $1.99 but includes short, easy-to-understand HD video lessons covering four critical self-defense moves: Wrist Grab Defense, Punch Defense, Body Grab Defense and Choke Defense. The app is designed to teach viewers how to react to those common attack scenarios and can be executed with little practice. You CAN Fight ladies! Get this app and take control of any dangerous situation. I’ve already started practicing!
Up to Modern day calendar syncs all your social media calendars and your google calendars. It’s a free app that you can sign into with Facebook. The Up to app also allows you to follow event feeds; I chose US, Mexico, and Chinese holidays. Finally I synced all my events using the Up to app and presto; finite! Now I do not have an excuse to miss someone’s birthday.
I remember my first week of college; I signed up for like 5 credit cards not because I wanted them but because you got a free t-shirt... what starving college student turns down free schwag?? And then it happens to all of us the credit cards come in all pretty and new, before you know in a broke (just after you paid tuition) moment you start charging things. The Mint app helps you budget your bank account, loans, and credit cards all in one by signing up with it’s free app. If you bank online Mint is pretty simple to set up, just find your bank and use the same log in as you do for your bank and it locates it for you. Once your accounts are located you are directed to your Mint screen overview which shows your accounts, budget, cash flow, alerts, advice (apparently I have a small dining out and shopping problem), and investments. The Mint app is a pretty cool way to have all your different accounts in one place and keep on budget…because no one likes the ramen diet.
With the Scientific Calculator, Mint Budgeting app, Up to Calendar, You Can fight app, and Pling app you are set for the semester. Good Luck to all you back to school tech geeks and remember knowledge is power! Go Geek or Go Home!
