5 inexpensive ways to show your Valentine that you care

Roses and a box of chocolates are the Valentine’s Day standard but let’s face it, that’s a little boring. The gifts that mean the most are the gifts that show that you truly know and understand your Valentine. It will take a little more thought than just stopping by the drugstore on your way home from work, but there are many ways to show your Valentine that you care. Here are five ideas that won’t break the bank:

COOK A ROMANTIC DINNER
Show off your culinary skills with a home-cooked, romantic dinner. Sure, Cornish game hen will impress but if your sweetie’s favorite dish is lasagna, then you should make lasagna. If their favorite thing in the whole world to eat is pigs in a blanket then roll those piggies up in blankies. By making their favorite dish, you’ll show that you made it especially with their likes in mind. If you can’t bring yourself to eat macaroni and cheese with cut up hot dogs, then try recreating your first date meal. Don’t forget the candles and mood music.

THEIR FAVORITE BOOK OR MOVIE
If you know that your Valentine loves the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s but doesn’t own a copy, pick one up. If they already own a copy, this won’t work for you. If they have a favorite book that they already own, you could try to find a first edition copy of the book. It will probably set you back a pretty penny but it will definitely show that you know what they like and that you made an effort to seek out something special to give to them.

AN OLD-FASHIONED MIX TAPE
The good ol’ mix tape reeks of seventh grade but that is what makes it so special. Who doesn’t long for those days of puppy love? Remember what it was like to fall in love before you had your heart broken a million times? Remember what it was like to not feel jaded about love? A really good mix tape can bring back those feelings. Don’t fill it with cheesy love songs that don’t mean anything to you personally. You should include songs that bring back fond memories of your relationship together. Try to think about the first concert you saw together, the song that was playing the first time you kissed, and the first song you danced to at your wedding.

A HOME-MADE ART PROJECT
It helps if you are artistically inclined for this one, but a home-made art project can mean the most. No woman can resist a portrait of herself drawn or painted by her lover. If you can crochet or knit, a hand-made cap or scarf can keep your Valentine warm when you’re not around to snuggle. Whatever artistic talent you possess, show it off this Valentine’s Day.

WRITE A POEM
If painting isn’t your bag, you can always try writing a poem. It doesn’t have to rhyme – the best love poems don’t in fact. It does have to come from the heart though so grab a pen and let your love flow on paper. If writing a poem feels too foreign for you, try writing a heart-felt letter that explains how you feel about your lover. If you’re not a wordsmith, you can try finding a classic love poem that says how you feel better than you can yourself and reading it aloud this Valentine’s Day.
