We've had a good 2013, but I can't wait until next year (or tomorrow, whichever comes first). 2014 will be the year of the mega-tournament! These are tournaments on at least 2 tracks, lasting more than one day, and often featuring skaters from more than 1 continent.
I plan on attending all 5, what's your schedule look like?
- Men's Roller Derby World Cup 14-16 March Birmingham, UK
15 national teams getting together on 2 tracks to determine the men's champion of the world. After the successes of the first women's world cup, the international derby movement is booming. Tickets still on sale!
- Beach Brawl 2-4 May Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Over 30 teams, including European teams, competing in the biggest tournament in the history of WFTDA tournaments. Top teams and refs are already there, shouldn't you be?
- ECDX 20-22 June Philadelphia, PA
It's a classic! The 7th running of ECDX will feature the classic 2-track format, with a third for non-sanctioned bouts. Those "challenge" bouts can often be the most fun, and there's a pool across the road for when you need a break from the derby!
- State Wars 21-23 November Daytona Beach, FL
Florida has two tournaments here, and this one's the newest format. This tournament will feature state all-star teams facing off to determine which is the strongest US state!
- Blood & Thunder World Cup 4-7 December Dallas, TX
The first one was a huge success! The world cup helped bring derby to different corners of the world, and the next one promises to be even bigger, adding teams such as West Indies and Wales.
It's a full schedule, but it'll all be worth it. How much do you love derby?
