5 Chanukah books for kids ages 5 and up

If your children or someone you know attends Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Francisco, the Lisa Kampner Hebrew Academy in San Francisco, or the Jewish Community High School of the Bay, also in San Francisco, you may be familiar with the many books available for children about Chanukah.  If not though, the San Francisco Children's Fiction Examiner would like to recommend these five titles about Chanukah for children ages 5 and up.

Hanukkah Books for  infants and toddlers

The Hanukkah Hop by Erica Silverman and Steve D'Amico (Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers, 2011)  Everyone is preparing the house for Hanukkah and soon cousins, grandparents, and other family members will be arriving to share food, stories, and traditions!

Chanukah Lights by Michael J. Rosen and Robert Sabuda (Candlewick, 2011)  This pop-up book explores Chanukah in different places at different times.  Herod's temple, a shtetl in Russia, an Israeil kibbutz and more.  This will become a family treasure to look at again and again each time Chanukah is celebrated.

Harvest of Light by Allison Ofanansky (Kar-Ben Pub, 2011)  A little girl whose family lives in Israel and grows olives to make oil for the menorah explains each step involved for making this necessary Chanukah item.

The Miracle of Hanukkah by Seymour Chwast (Blue Apple Books, 2011) The miracle that became the reason for Hanukkah is retold in a picture book format.  It is sure to help explain the why of Hanukkah in a way little ones can understand.

Blintzes for Blitzen by Elise Okrend and Phil Okrend (Mixed Blessing, Inc., 2010)  One day Blitzen smells a delicious smell and wanders through the village determined to discover where the smell is coming from.  He discovers a shopkeeper named Bernie preparing for his family's Hanukkah celebration.
