The New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils faced off on Thursday night at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. The showdown between the two teams was the first of two, the second game coming Saturday night in the Islanders future home, the Barclays Center.
The first period started similar to that of Michael Grabner's early score on Tuesday against Calgary. With a man advantage, Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson began a back and forth passing game with Anders Lee. This ended with Lee burying the puck at 03:31, giving the Islanders the first score of the night.
Not but a little over three minutes later, the Islanders found themselves in a penalty kill situation, however, the result would be far different. Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey managed a 2-on-1 breakaway resulting in a pass from Okposo and Josh Bailey reaching the back of the net, putting the Islanders up by two with a shorthanded goal at 06:55 in the first.
After a Devils goal at 08:05, Josh Bailey capitalized on another shorthanded goal after an Eric Boulton tripping penalty. Bailey found himself in the right place at the right time, deflecting a shot from Kyle Okposo, ending with another shorthanded goal at 18:05 in the first period. Eric Boulton would come out of the penalty box, receiving a pass from Anders Lee, resulting in another quick score for the Islanders a minute and a half later.
The second period showed to be a comeback rally from the Devils. With a goal from Marek Zidlicky at 02:37 and another goal from Jon Merrill at 03:50, the Devils brought themselves within one, early in the period.
The third period would only see one goal, coming from the Islanders. Peter Regin came down the right side, beating a defender, scoring with a backhanded shot only 03:45 into the third. The Islanders would win 5-3 for the first of two meetings in the preseason.
The Islanders play the Devils tonight in the Barclays Center at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be streamed live on NewYorkIslanders.com.
