4th of July healthy desserts

Holidays are a time to indulge but with all of the other amazing picnic food available on 4th of July, why not try some healthier dessert ideas? Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of all the fresh fruit that is available, here are some healthy ideas to incorporate into your picnic!

Red White and Blue fruit salad:

1 large watermelon

5-6 bananas

1 carton of blueberries

1 star cookie cutter

Use a star cookie-cutter to cut watermelon then add blueberries and even some sliced bananas for a festive fruit salad!

4th of July Strawberries:

1 large carton of strawberries

Vanilla Greek Yogurt (3 containers)

Blue sprinkles

Wax paper

Clean strawberries then pat dry. Dip strawberries into vanilla Greek yogurt (don’t forget to mix the yogurt when you open it before dipping the strawberries) and add blue sprinkles. Line the dipped strawberries on a tray lined with wax paper. Freeze for 1-2 hours before serving. This is a great alternative to chocolate-covered strawberries and is much more festive!

Red White and Blue Yogurt Parfaits

1 8-ounce carton of vanilla fat-free yogurt

1-8 ounce container of frozen fat free whipped topping (thawed)

1 carton of blueberries

1 carton of strawberries(sliced) or raspberries

In a large bowl stir together the vanilla low-fat yogurt and the fat free whipped dessert topping. Use this mixture to alternate layers with blueberries and strawberries or raspberries in cups. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Patriotic Kabob

1 pack of kabob skewers

2 cartons of strawberries

1 carton of blueberries

4-5 bananas

After the strawberries and blueberries have been washed, use the skewers to pierce the fruit and line it up on the skewer. You can use whatever pattern you would like; these kabobs could be arranged side-by-side to make the American flag! This is just as festive as the fruit salad, but you don’t need any cups or bowls-kabobs are a perfect on-the-go party snack!
