Last Night, The New York Film Festival premiered 'Melancholia'. Actor Alexander Skarsgaard, actress Kirsten Dunst and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg attended the premiere at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. NYFF will be hosting one more screening of the film this Thursday at 9pm.
The after-party for the film was hosted by Deleon Tequila at the trendy Stone Rose Lounge. Kirsten Dunst, Alan Cumming, Alexander Skarsgard, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Michael Stipe, Andrew Levitas, Brady Corbet, Chaske Spencer and Mark Cuban of Magnolia Pictures all attended the after-party.
We hear: At the Melancholia premiere after-party, Kirsten Dunst was in a good mood. After walking the red carpet picture with co-stars Alexander Skarsgard and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten grabbed a seat in front of Stone Rose Lounge’s iconic view of Columbus Circle where she spent the evening sipping Diet Coke and laughing with friends. Aside from one cigarette break, the actress spent the entire evening at her VIP table standing up and down nearly a dozen times to hug friends who came over to congratulate her on her Melancholia performance, most notably entertainment financier Mark Cuban whose company Magnolia Pictures released the film. Nearly the last to leave Stone Rose Lounge, Mark spent several hours making the rounds to chat with the eclectic crowd, including 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer, designer Christian Siriano, and news anchor Dan Rather. Whether her new rocker boyfriend or the excitement of a new movie, Kirsten was in uncharacteristically high spirits laughing all night, sporting a healthy glow and stunning fans in her sleek, black, floor-length gown.
Here is a synopsis of the film: "The end of the world—and the collapse of the spirit—has never been depicted as beautifully and wrenchingly as in Melancholia, the latest provocation from Lars von Trier (Antichrist, NYFF '09). The title refers both to a destructive planet “that has been hiding behind the sun” and the crippling depression of new bride Justine (a revelatory Kirsten Dunst, rightful winner of the Best Actress award at Cannes this year), whose mental illness is so severe that she drives away her groom during their disastrous wedding reception. As the extinction of the planet looms ever larger, Justine is desperately tended to by her sister, Claire (an equally magnificent Charlotte Gainsbourg), herself gripped by anxiety over the impending doomsday. Melancholia’s premise may be science fiction, but the feelings of despair it plumbs are the most heart-felt human drama. A Magnolia Pictures release."
