49ers will stick with David Akers on Saturday

Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced on Thursday that David Akers will be the placekicker for the Packers game on Saturday. He said that Akers gives the 49ers the best chance to win.

The team signed Billy Cundiff during the bye week and allowed him to compete with David Akers for the starting kicking spot. Akers struggled throughout this season and most recently missed two of four field goal attempts in his last game. Both Cundiff and Akers competed against each other this past week and it appears Akers retained the starting job.

With Cundiff remaining on the team, the 49ers could still use him if they advance deeper into the playoffs. On Monday, Harbaugh said it was possible that both kickers could be active for Saturday's game, but it's unlikely to happen. Akers was not listed on the injury report and appears to be recovered from his pelvis injury.
