49ers will host Nnamdi Asomugha

Looking for a CB who can shut down receivers, the 49ers will host Nnamdi Asomugha today, according to a league source. Asomugha was best known for being the best CB at one on one coverage in man defense with the Oakland Raiders. He struggled the last two seasons in Philadelphia under a multiple scheme and was released on Tuesday.

Previously, the 49ers had interest in the 10-year, 31-year old veteran in 2011 when he became a free agent, but never made a visit. This will be his first visit with the 49ers, indicating mutual interest between the player and the team.

Asomugha would fit better with the 49ers due to the idea of press coverage and cornerbacks only covering one side of the field. In Philadelphia under Juan Castillo, the Eagles had the CBs switch sides during the games. The only downside is that he isn't as strong in zone coverage and was exposed with the Eagles in the last two seasons.

Other teams who are interested in Asomugha include the Cardinals, Texans, Broncos and Saints, according to CBS Sports.

In other ways to address the secondary, the 49ers hosted safety Charles Woodson on Wednesday, but there was no agreement. Another safety, Louis Delmas, is expected to visit the team facility today, according to ESPN reporting Adam Schefter.

The 49ers initially showed interest in Dolphins CB Sean Smith, but there has been little action since free agency began on Tuesday.
