49ers wild card offensive report card vs. Packers

Here are the grades from the 49ers 23-20 win over the Packers in the wild card round:

Colin Kaepernick: A-

He had only 16 completions and 227 passing yards, but made the most of them. Kaepernick's scrambles which resulted in 98 yards on the ground were a huge factor for the 49ers as they converted six third downs. The 49ers kept the Packers defense on their heels for majority of the game en route to the win.

Running Backs: B-

Frank Gore only had 66 rushing yards on the ground to go with one touchdown, but he was an important blocker in pass protection for Colin Kaepernick. Despite not being the most effective on the ground, his blocking abilities took the 49ers a long way throughout the game.

Wide Receivers: B

Michael Crabtree was the go-to guy for this game as the Packers tried to limit Anquan Boldin as much as possible. If another WR had production in this game, the grade would be an "A-" at minimum. Unfortunately no other WR was highly involved at the slot position. Quinton Patton's only touch was on a reverse which resulted in a loss of one yard.

Tight Ends: D

The Packers respected Vernon Davis by keeping a close eye on him. He had one enormous 28-yard touchdown while Garrett Celek had one reception for six yards. Vance McDonald was used as a blocker, but looked ineffective when going out for a pass.

Offensive Line: B+

Pass protection was great for the most part as there were mostly coverage sacks or pressure resulting from blitzes. There wasn't enough in the running game in terms of giving it to Frank Gore and Colin Kaepernick's scrambles helped hide any other issues in pass protection. Overall it was a very good day in not allowing pressure.

Coaching: D

The 49ers won the game, but it doesn't take away the fact that Greg Roman put them in a position where the game was decided as late as it was. Two field goals to start the game gave the Packers a chance to do something as they intercepted Kaepernick on the third possession. The Packers shut down the 49ers in the third quarter before a late surge by Colin Kaepernick in scrambling and throws to Crabtree won the game. There are still questions going forward from red zone offense to calling timeouts multiple times when the play clock was winding down.
