The reserve defense really held their ground in the 15-13 preseason win over the Chiefs on Friday evening. Here are some notes after reviewing the tape of the second 49ers preseason game:
-For the secondary, it was Perrish Cox who stood out the most with two sacks off the blitz. Cox defended a couple passes and was also seen on special teams during the kickoffs.
-The outside linebacker depth looked solidified with Cam Johnson, Corey Lemonier and veteran Parys Haralson all contributing to the pass rushing. Haralson also had a blocked punt as well as a fumble recovery.
-Alex Smith was facing pressure quite a bit in the first half with Lemonier, Johnson, Haralson, Dan Skuta and even Eric Reid getting the the former 49ers quarterback. Haralson most notably beat Eric Fisher for a sack.
-During the 104-yard kickoff, it was Cam Johnson who was caught out of place as he failed to tackle Quintin Demps. Along with Johnson and Phil Dawson, Dan Skuta, Perrish Cox, Craig Dahl, Tramaine Brock, Trenton Robinson, Nick Moody, C.J. Spillman, Corey Lemonier, and Anthony Dixon were on the field for that touchdown.
-Frank Gore was responsible for his own 52-yard run when he changed directions to the left. The Chiefs had the right side contained, but no one guarded the other side which gave room for Gore to run. There was also a nice downfield block by Vernon Davis which contributed on the play.
-While Special teams was mostly a disaster on coverage units, Colton Schmidt had a good outing with a 62-yard punt from the back of his own endzone. Considering how short the distance was from long snapper Brian Jennings and Schmidt, he did a good job at getting it off in time.
-A.J. Jenkins was covered by Sean Smith for majority of the night. He could have had an extra step on Smith had the ball been lobbed during the interception, but Colt McCoy underthrew it where Jenkins had no chance. It wasn't a bad game from Jenkins, but unfortunately not a good one either.
-Nnamdi Asomugha wasn't thrown to very often, but he defended his only test. Alex Smith tried throwing to the left side he broke up a pass intended for Jon Baldwin.
