Hours after winning 33-14 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the San Francisco 49ers will have to wait another week to clinch a postseason berth as the Cardinals won 37-34 in overtime against the Titans. San Francisco needed Arizona to lose combined with a loss by the Philadelphia Eagles or Dallas Cowboys. Dallas and Philadelphia both lost to the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, respectively.
The Philadelphia Eagles were blown out by the Minnesota Vikings in a 48-30 loss. Third string RB Matt Asiata had three rushing touchdowns in relief for Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart. Matt Cassel had 382 passing yards and two touchdown passes on the Eagles defense as the backup for Christian Ponder.
After the Eagles pulled within striking range making the score 27-22 at the end of the third quarter, the Vikings scored 21 points in the fourth to seal the game. Philadelphia can only make the postseason by winning the NFC East division.
The real chaos happened when the Arizona Cardinals were initially leading 34-17 in the fourth quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a pick-six to Antoine Cason with 6:22 remaining as Arizona was leading by 17 points. He later threw a touchdown to Michael Preston on the ensuing possession to bring Tennessee within 10 points.
After forcing Arizona to punt, the Titans were able to drive 87 yards for a short field goal by Rob Bironas and recovered the onside kick. Larry Fitzgerald initially had his hands on the ball, but it was knocked loose and Daimion Stafford fell on it. Fitzpatrick was able to hit Kendall Wright to put Tennessee in the red zone on back to back throws.
Preston became the go-to player again with the game-tying touchdown as he scored it with only 10 seconds remaining.
All momentum was on the Titans' side heading into overtime as they won the toss, but it was all for nothing when Fitzpatrick was intercepted by Cason again. Carson Palmer engineered a drive from midfield and helped Arizona get into field goal range. Jay Feely hit a 41-yard field goal to win the game and keep the Cardinals alive.
The San Francisco 49ers will host the Atlanta Falcons for what should be the final game at Candlestick Park on Monday night football. Arizona will beat to Seattle to play the Seahawks. If the Seahawks win, they will win the division and the 49ers will clinch a postseason berth regardless of what happens next Monday.
