The San Francisco 49ers have announced the signing of rookie free agent defensive end Will Tukuafu to a two-year deal.

Here's a little info on him from the official press release:

Tukuafu (6-4, 272) joins the 49ers as a rookie free agent from the University of Oregon. He was originally signed earlier this year by the Seattle Seahawks before being released on June 22. Tukuafu totaled 131 tackles, 14.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles over the final three years of his collegiate career for the Ducks. He attended Scottsdale Community College prior to transferring to Oregon. A native of Salt Lake City, UT, Tukuafu earned the team’s Gonyea Award (most inspirational player) and Schaffeld Award (outstanding defensive lineman), as a senior.

Tukuafu will wear jersey #63.

With defensive end Kentwan Balmer missing practices, the 49ers have an extra roster spot. There is no guarantee right now as to what capacity Tukuafu will be used. But as a rookie, he will have to learn the ropes of the defense and hope to make an impact in this Sunday's preseason game.

A few notes from training camp.

  • Wide receiver Michael Crabtree sustained a strained neck yesterday. He has not participated in practice as he recovers.
  • Cornerback Phillip Adams, receivers Brandon Jones and Jason Hill are both nursing hamstring injuries. Linebacker Travis LaBoy, who has been out with a concussion since last week, has yet to return to practice with teammates.

So I guess it is safe to say we won't be seeing Crabtree getting playtime in the game this sunday?

Don't know the extent of the injury, but if he can play, I assume he will be in for at least one series, possibly two.
