The 49ers will head to Nashville and face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday for Week 7. The Titans are playing right where they were projected to be at .500 with a 3-3 record.
Tennessee has played near mistake-free football when Jake Locker is the starting quarterback, but is flawed when Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing. The 49ers defense will be expected to take care of itself with how they have performed throughout this season. Chris Johnson is a shell of his former self in recent years and it shouldn't be difficult to stop the Titans' offense if Fitzpatrick starts.
The 49ers offense could decide this game one way or another with their execution up front on the offensive line. Tennessee has a better pass defense than the stats will indicate. Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner are two of the best cornerback duos in the NFL as of right now with their coverage skills.
Tennessee has great tacklers as Greg Roman indicated, but they're prone to giving up yardage. He said the tackling from safety Bernard Pollard is a strength of the team.
"[Pollard] is all over the place," Roman said on Thursday. "They’ll have him covering the tight ends at times. They’ll have him down in the box quite a bit. They’ll also ask him to play half the field. But he’s a really heady player. He’s always in the right spot. Always.”
The passing game will still depend on Vernon Davis and Anquan Boldin to take most of the plays and the supporting cast needs to improve. Davis was the entire offense for the 49ers against the Cardinals with 171 receiving yards alone in the first half. It wasn't until the Arizona defense was worn down late in the third quarter where the 18-play, 89-yard drive settled the game. There was a late contribution from Kyle Williams on third down which drew praise from Jim Harbaugh after the game.
They should stick to their identity on the ground with Tennessee's secondary being a strength. The 49ers are 27-7 when Frank Gore has at least 100 yards on the ground, including two games this season reaching that milestone.
As Harbaugh said at the end of last week's game, they were able to 'grind meat' by rushing it near the end. If they do it again, 'grinding meat' will be a recipe for victory.
