49ers playoff scenarios for 2013 are quite complicated. There are several ways the 2013 San Francisco 49ers playoff scenarios could go, ranging from clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC to not even making the postseason. On Sunday night (Dec. 22), the Arizona Cardinals beat the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field to stay alive and move to 10-5 on the season. A loss by the Cardinals would have guaranteed the 49ers at least a wild card slot.
Thanks to the Cardinals, though, the team still has a chance to win the NFC West as well. Wins over the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona in the next two weeks, as well as a Seattle loss in Week 17 to the St. Louis Rams would give the team a division title and a first round bye. Those results as well as another loss by the Carolina Panthers and suddenly the team would become the No. 1 seed heading into the 2014 NFC Playoffs.
It would be pretty remarkable if the team somehow found a way to clinch that No. 1 seed after sitting in a wild card slot for most of the season. As for the easiest of the 2013 San Francisco playoff scenarios, it comes down to the team simply winning on Monday night (Dec. 23) against the Falcons. Win that game and they clinch at least one of the wild card slots. The team loses tie-breakers to the New Orleans Saints, so a tie in the standings would put them at No. 6.
When it comes to the worst case scenario for fans, two losses to finish out the season will eliminate San Francisco from playoff contention.
