The presence of Anquan Boldin has made an impact on the team. The 11-year veteran wide receiver has become a role model among teammates with the 49ers. With the new acquisition of Jon Baldwin, offensive coordinator Greg Roman says his leadership is more important than ever.
“I think we’re very fortunate to have some really good leadership on offense,” Roman said on Tuesday afternoon. “I think Anquan Boldin is a guy that’s done nothing but impressed since day one with how he approaches his job, how he mentors his teammates.”
Roman said Boldin's advice has been valuable and it would be foolish to not listen. He also said Vernon Davis and Colin Kaepernick have both been leaders.
The biggest question mark for the 49ers offensively is the competition at wide receiver. Boldin will be the unanimous No. 1, but it will be unclear who is behind him. Roman is hoping for someone to emerge from the mix to support Davis and Boldin in the passing game.
Both Boldin and Davis can help teammates and make others around them better, according to Roman. He said that if players follow their footsteps, they will take giant steps forward.
“If you have the opportunity to watch, listen and learn from players who have that track-record of success and how they do it on a daily basis," said Roman. "[Look at] how they approach their job, how they get prepared, how they take care of their body, how they study, how they pay attention in meetings, how they can do everything they can possibly do to know their job so that they can do their job at a very high level. That is the one thing that, if you’re a young player and you don’t take advantage of that, we need to have a talk.”
Jon Baldwin, the newest WR to the join the team is already looking forward to working with Boldin. He learned about Boldin from Steve Breaston, a free agent WR who was a teammate for three years with Boldin on the Arizona Cardinals. Breaston was with Baldwin for the last two years in Kansas City.
Breaston said Boldin showed a reputation for how to play as a WR, according to Baldwin. Now that Baldwin and Boldin are teammates, the former first round pick in 2011 hopes to learn the same ways that Breaston did.
“He always talked up Anquan Boldin from how smart he was and how he learned some things from him,” Baldwin said. “With that being said and me being here, I can do the same thing. I’m going to be talking with him periodically.”
