49ers LB Aldon Smith breaks team rookie sack record

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith broke Charles Haley's rookie sack record on Sunday with his 2.5-sack performance. Smith now has 13 total sacks on the year, beating Haley's 1986 mark of 12.

"The guy that I passed, Charles Haley, it's an honor for me to break the record," Smith said after the game.

Smith said he and Haley had met during the offseason. During the lockout, the two talked and they became acquiantances. Now he's looking to continue his rise to one of the top pass rushers.

"I'm just trying to change my moves and be versatile, hard to block," Smith said.

Smith looks to be in the running with linebacker Von Miller as the top candidates for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Smith trails Jason Babin, Jared Allen, Demarcus Ware and Jason Pierre-Paul for the league lead in sacks this year.
