49ers kicking competition will head to Candlestick

David Akers and Billy Cundiff will take their competition to Candlestick Park on Monday, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The 49ers have yet to decide who will be the placekicker for their NFC Divisional-round playoff game against the Packers on Saturday evening. Harbaugh didn't announce a date when this competition will be decided.

"We have a leader in the clubhouse and we'll see that goes today and tomorrow," said Harbaugh. "It's good competition and we're working through it."

Akers made 29 of 42 field goal attempts in the regular season while Cundiff struggled with the Redskins making seven out of 12 before being released. Harbaugh said the leader of the kicking competition is based off of the last two weeks. Besides choosing the kicker, he said there were several other problems that will be addressed this week.

"We have some other issues that need to be fixed," said Harbaugh. "We got to shore up our protection. We've had too much penetration. We've had extra points tipped. We got split at the wing. There has to be an understand that that needs to improve as well. We've been working on it."

Harbaugh said he expects both kickers to stay on the 53-man roster throughout this week. He also opened up the idea that Akers and Cundiff could be on the 46-man active roster and suit up for the game.
