The NFL announced today that 32 draft picks were given as compensation to 16 teams for the 2013 NFL Draft. The 49ers were awarded three draft picks to compensate the losses of Josh Morgan and Blake Costanzo during the free agency period last season. They will have an extra draft pick near the end of the fourth round (131st overall) and two picks near the end of the seventh round (246th and 252nd overall). In total, the 49ers will have 14 draft picks for next April's draft.
Compensatory picks are awarded based on a secret formula that weighs how many free agents a team lost vs. signed, the size of the contracts, the departed player's impact and any postseason awards. This is saying how well the players lost are in comparison to the players gained from last season. With the losses of Dashon Goldson, Ricky Jean Francois, Isaac Sopoaga and Delanie Walker via free agency, they are most likely to receive compensation for the 2014 NFL Draft next year.
