Less than a week into their offseason, the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff has already gone through a change.
Offensive quality control coach Bobby Engram has been hired by the University of Pittsburgh to become their wide receivers coach. After only one season with the 49ers, Engram joins first-year coach Paul Chryst, brother of 49ers quarterback coach Geep Chryst.
The hire was already set in place, but the University of Pittsburgh had to wait until the 49ers' season was finished before anything became official.
“Bobby Engram is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Pitt's head coach Paul Chryst said in a statement. “I’m really excited that our players will have the opportunity to learn and benefit from Bobby’s tremendous experience and knowledge of the game. He will be a great teacher on the field and make an even greater impact on our players off the field.”
It's no surprise Engram would find a new coaching opportunity elsewhere. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said that he believes that members of his coaching staff are qualified for bigger coaching jobs.
Special teams coordinator Brad Seely was scheduled to meet with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday for their then vacant head coaching job. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman had been recently linked to head coaching positions at Penn State and Tulane.
As more coaching jobs become available, the more likely that those teams will seek members of the 49ers' staff to fill in those positions.
