The San Francisco 49ers are adding a new member to their coaching staff by hiring Tracy Smith to become their new special teams assistant coach, as reported by Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.
Smith had been on the Seahawks coaching staff as a coaching assistant. His father Carl is also on the same staff, serving as the team's quarterback coach.
Brad Seely, the 49ers' special teams coach, has worked with Smith in the past with the Cleveland Browns. In 2010, Smith was the assistant coach to Seely, the special teams coordinator.
Adding a special teams assistant might mean that the 49ers are looking to have Seely do a little more work as the assistant to Jim Harbaugh. This past season, Harbaugh sought advice from Seely during the games and if Seely is increasing his role there, adding someone he can trust to help out with special teams makes sense.
