44-year-old fetus update: Image of fetus is bizarre, 'stone baby' not removed

The woman with the 44-year-old fetus inside her body has decided not to remove it. On Feb. 14, The Sun Times posted an x-ray image of a "stone baby" and the size of the fetus might surprise you. Since the bones of the "baby" are covered over in calcium, the whole fetus is sort of intact and in a hard ball inside the stomach of this woman (and any other woman who has a "lithopedion").

As previously reported, an 84-year-old woman from Brazil had severe stomach pain and sought the advice of a doctor. After an x-ray, it was discovered that the woman had a "stone baby" inside of her. Rather than having the fetus removed, however, the woman is keeping it inside of her.

The photo of the 44-year-old fetus is crazy -- you can basically see the whole "baby" -- head, limbs, and all. It's unclear why the woman doesn't want to have the fetus removed -- either she feels as though the surgery is too risky or she has some sort of connection to her unborn child -- but whatever her reason, the "stone baby" isn't going to just disappear.

It's unknown if there is anything that can be done to curb the pain but the woman is evidently going to suffer through it -- now that she knows what was (is) wrong.

The 44-year-old fetus found inside the Brazilian woman isn't the first of its kind, either. A few months ago, an 80-year-old woman from Colombia had similar symptoms and doctors found a 40-year-old fetus inside of her. She, however, opted to have the "stone baby" removed.
