Valentine's Day may be for lovers, but a group of Seventh-day Adventists from the Brooklyn South Staten Island Federation decided to mark the occasion by sharing God's love within their community.

Eager to put "love in action," the volunteers gathered at the Mamre Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brooklyn on Friday to prepare the 400 roses which were donated by the Church; Pastor Jose Cortes, Jr., the Director of Adventist Youth Ministries for the Atlantic Union Youth Conference; Dr. Simone English; and Thorly James. The roses which ranged in color from red to yellow were attached to a small card with a message of love from the Bible or a quote from an influential thinker.

In less than 30 minutes, all of the roses were distributed to passersby on Utica Avenue and Avenue H who were surprised but touched by the simple gesture which brought a smile to their faces.

This act of compassion is the first of many events, including a Stop the Hunger Walkathon the group will organize to meet the needs of their community.
