An investigation is underway into what caused a car to slam into a tree along Garfield Boulevard early this morning, killing all four women inside.
The identities have not been released but all the women appeared to be in their 20s and 30s.
The accident occurred just before 2 a.m. at 1040 West Garfield. The car was westbound when it left a straight section of road and hit the tree, according to police spokesman Officer Robert Perez.
The car, a Pontiac sedan, had to be traveling at a high rate of speed because it was demolished. (see video link below)
Three women were pronounced dead shortly after the accident and one died several hours later, he said.
Perez said at this point, it does not appear there was another car involved in the accident but he said it's still early in the investigation.
This is the second quadruple fatality accident in the Chicago area in recent weeks. On January 30, four men died when their car slammed into a tree in Crest Hill at 1:30 a.m. A report on that accident was released this weeks shows speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
