On Tues., Jan. 10, CBS Atlanta reported that Ryan Brunn was indicted in the murder investigation of Jorelys Rivera, which the Georgia's Bureau of Investigation (GBI) can take credit for, since they found the 20-year-old alleged killer. Yet there are still four unsolved homicides in Georgia needing your help, and remain on the GBI's website, still waiting for such closure for their families.
One of those cases is the unsolved murder of Doris Spillers Worrell, who was gunned down at her and her husband's own business, Jon's Sports Park in Douglas, GA.
Two men were charged with conspiracy to commit murder back in March of 2008 in that case, and the men, Brandon Cage and Glidden Rodriguez, were arrested by Coffee County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) deputies. But neither man was ever charged with Worrell's murder. (Article continues below)
Woman's employee arrested for conspiracy
Glidden Rodriguez had worked for the couple at Jon's Sports Park prior to the shooting death of the 39-year-old woman, according to the GBI. But WALB reported in Sept. of 2011 that while Brandon Cage did not work for Jon's Sports Park when Doris was killed,
"At the time of the arrest last week [he] was an employee of that park," according to Coffee County Sheriff Captain Scott Harper.
Doris' sister, Le Ann Tuggle, believes that "The fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much," according to the James 5:17 scripture verse she has on her "Friends of Doris" website, and to that end she has expressed her and her elderly mother's hope that her sister's murder will be solved, according to WALB.
But it may take someone in the community to help that happen. If you remember any details about the case from back then that could help law enforcement now, please contact the Coffee County Sheriff's Office at (912) 384-4227 or the GBI at (912) 389-4103.
Doris Worrell unsolved murder details
According to the GBI, at approximately 11:17 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2006, Coffee County SO deputies responded to a shooting at Jon's Sports Park. They found Doris, the victim of a shooting. Doris' husband Jon Worrell had left the premises at 9:40 a.m., to run errands, leaving his wife behind cleaning. He was the one to find Doris' body, when he returned at approximately 11:15 a.m.
Doris Worrell had had a birthday two days prior to her death, and her sister's website details the personal events going on in Doris' life during that period, which included the struggles of supporting an illegal immigrant girl residing in the home with Doris, her husband and their own children.
The website depicts the sad events that often follow cases in which no closure is ever reached for a homicide victim: family splintering.
Le Ann Tuggle says in her online effort to remember her sister that Doris' husband Jon moved out of the U.S. to Costa Rica after the murder and that ICE deported the illegal immigrant girl that Doris helped to raise--and who was the only witness to the Douglas, GA crime.
4 unsolved homicides in Georgia needing your help
Of the 4 unsolved homicides in Georgia needing your help, Doris Worrell's case is the more recent. And while the GBI has many more unsolved homicides than the four listed in this article, space does not permit detailing them all in one writing, unfortunately.
Three other GBI unsolved homicides include that of
- Mary Susan Humphrey, a Moody Airforce Base Airman who disappeared in May of 1980 in Valdosta, GA, after leaving a night club with a man she met there. Her body was found a month later, on Old Willacoochee Road--also known as Double Bridge Road in Berrien County.
- Christine Allen, 48, who was a file clerk for an Atlanta firm. Her roommate said Allen hadn't been seen since April 12, 2002, but didn't report her missing until April 19 of that year. Allen's body, however, had been found on April 18 in Reynolds Nature Preserve in Morrow, GA. But it was listed as an unidentified body by police until July 2006, when work on another investigation resulted in the identification. So far six long years her family didn't know what had happened to her.
- Patricia A. Hanlon was 53 at the time of her brutal bedroom murder. She was still wearing bed clothes when a coworker found her around noon on July 27, 2000. The backdoor to the home was partially ajar and police found no signs of forcible entry, but the place had been ransacked, with some items believed missing. Police estimate her death occurred sometime between July 24-27.
