Nowadays, expect for hiring managers to Google and Facebook you prior to any initial calls to arrange an interview. You can also expect that prior to an interview, all of your references will be contacted via email, phone or by mail to request information about your credentials, character and overall performance history.
Ask 3 to 4 people who can vouch for your character, work history and work accomplishments to serve as references for you. Give each reference a hand copy of your resume and also email them a copy of your resume. If they are out of town, snail mail your references a copy of your resume in addition to the email. In addition, please give each reference 4 to 5 talking points covering your best accomplishments. This way, when they are contacted, they will be equipped with career professional information about how you made a difference in your military history.
Ask each of them to formulate a reference letter for you, sign it and then scan to you. Getting these items in gear prior to leaving the military helps to keep your references connected with your achievements and accomplishments via LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.
