4 tips for getting a healthy self image, setting realistic weight loss goals

In stark contrast to the national obesity epidemic, up to three percent of American teenagers find themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum, suffering from eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia, according to eMedTV. While these conditions can be caused by multiple factors like depression or psychological trauma, having an unhealthy self-image certainly contributes greatly.

Forging a healthy self-image, on the other hand, can aid in setting realistic weight loss goals and leading a healthier life style.

1) Love thyself

Self-loathing can cause emotional over-eating as well as starving your body. Even if you are not at your goal weight yet, loving yourself just the way you are right now is the first step to a healthy self-image and healthy eating habits. Focus on your skills and talents that have helped you accomplish career as well as personal goals. Appreciating your strengths helps you stay positive and maintain healthy eating habits.

2) Do not compare yourself to others

Since we all have different genetic code in the form of DNA it is only natural that we look unique. Comparing yourself to someone else would be the equivalent of comparing apples to oranges. There may be some similarities, but when it comes down to it every human being is an original work of art, so to speak. Weighing less than everyone else won't necessarily help you be more popular or better looking. Set a weight loss goal that is within a healthy BMI range for your height and age.

3) Choose a clothing style that fits your body type

Based on the fact that we are all built differently it only makes sense that we cannot all wear the same clothing style. Altering your body with extreme weight loss just to fit into those boy shorts is like trying to turn a Honda into a Porsche. Instead, buy clothes that flatter your shape and you will feel much better about yourself at any size throughout your weight loss journey.

4) Discover your inner athlete

Find a physical activity you enjoy as playing sports is the best way to build self-esteem while having fun. Even more so if you are good at it because you learn to appreciate your body for its strength and athletic abilities. As icing on the cake being active makes you burn more calories and being fit is never out of style.

At the end of the day everyone wants to be liked for who they are. But in order for others to like you, you have to like yourself first. Healthy weight loss is based on improving your health rather than punishing your body.
