4 things to consider when buying a private jet

See also

Whether you need a private jet for your company or for personal use, there are many things to look for when you shop for your new plane. These considerations go far beyond just price, so be sure to take the time to research each point before you settle on your new private jet.

Seating

When considering seating, you will need to think about how many people you hope to accommodate on an average flight. If you plan on flying eight or nine people on a regular basis, you may want to consider a model that seat more than this number. You will have more room for each person to move about the cabin, and you will have extra space for those occasions when you might want to accommodate a few more people.

Seating arrangements are also important. If your plan will be used for business, you will likely want to consider club seating to foster better business talks while in flight. Flexible seating arrangements also make the plane feel more relaxed and luxurious. Reclining seats are a must if you will be traveling overnight or long distances.

Galley Options

Some private jets come with the option for a wet galley, which means it has running water, while others simply have storage for catering trays. You can make your choice about what type of galley you need by examining how you will be using your jet. If you plan on taking short trips, a galley with catering storage might be sufficient. If you plan on traveling across the country or early in the mornings, a wet galley can be convenient for preparing tea and coffee. Some people just prefer having the option of a sink in the galley.

Lavatory Facilities

While not all private jets have a lavatory, many jet owners prefer the convenience of having one on board. This allows for more freedom to fly as much as you want, and you won't have to worry about how many beverages you consume during a flight. Many jets offer fully private facilities that are hidden behind a sliding door, and in some cases, seatbelts are included so that the room can be used for additional seating on the plane. More expensive jets offer larger bathrooms with extra amenities, including a mirrored vanity and storage space. Smaller jets don't offer true lavatory facilities, but they can often be more affordable, particularly if you won't be flying long distances.

Wi-Fi Connectivity and In-Flight Entertainment

These days, Wi-Fi connectivity is as important for personal use jets as it is for company jets. If you need to be connected, make sure that your private jet offers connectivity for you and your passengers. This allows everyone to make use of tablets, laptops and other devices while in the air.

Likewise, you will want to make sure there is at least one television screen to view movies during longer flights—especially if your private jet is for personal use. If your private jet is for business use, you may not need the television, unless you will be using it for presentations you show to potential clients.

While you will want to take the mechanics of your private jet into account, you will also want to make sure that the cabin is comfortable and offers all the amenities you expect from a private jet. When you find the plan with the right cockpit, engine configuration, on-board electronics, and fuel range, compare the cabins to make sure that you choose a plane that fits your unique needs.
