Inertia is the resistance of any object to change its state of rest or motion.Isaac Newton published the Laws of Motion in 1687. As defined, the change in the state of motion requires energy or force to alter that state. The laws primarily described objects by weight or mass, acceleration, and force. The laws did not describe people and their desire to be active. However, the effect of sitting around and doing nothing, changing activity levels, or business directions requires energy and motivation.Like inanimate objects, people have a tendency to stay on a path and not change direction: they have their own type of inertia when it comes to decisions. Then when it comes to physically moving their bodies, The Laws of Motion do apply.
It takes energy to redefine a business and change direction. It requires imagination and creativity to change that direction in a manner to be more successful: i.e. a PIVOT for example. This skill of assessment and moving quickly is something that entrepreneurs must develop in order to overcome potential slowdowns or disaster.Likewise, the start of something new, like a startup, requires large amounts of energy and commitment. The effort begins from the original concept and must continue through the life of the company.
People have the tendency to continue along a path of what they do normally.Sitting and watching TV can become an event that requires extra energy in order to start chores.Changing daily routines is difficult because it takes thought and energy to do something different. If you normally come home ready for dinner, deciding to go to the gym first requires extra motivation and energy to accomplish that goal.If you want to create a startup, but tend to be a single company person, changing direction can take extra motivation and energy.
A few things may help you change direction and state of inertia.Maybe some of the following will help you!
- Create: The creativity and imagination of people allow them to find new businesses, products, and directions. Inventions often come from solving problems or seeing things in a way that others do not. Creative events come from improving on activities and inventions. The more creative you feel the more you will want to create new things. People sometimes lose that creative and imaginative nature they had as children. You likely had it once, find it again and create things you find exciting and useful.
- Energize: It is critical that you have excitement and desire to start something you can call your own business. Likewise, you must really love the concept of the business you wish to launch. It is easy to develop greater motivation when you believe you will love doing something and find it exciting. This is true for most everything you do. You derive energy and desire the more exciting the potential activity.
- Plan: Creation of any new business requires proper planning. The planning stage helps you layout the direction and structure of the business. It also helps you vet the concept and ensure you are willing to commit the energy and resources. The research and development that goes toward creating a business plan and pitch will either make you more excited or turn you off to the concept. It is better to decide not to do the business rather than start it and find out you hate it!
- DO: This is the toughest part of the process. This is where decisions, commitments, and energy come together to START WORKING. This is an easier task for some than others, but that business will never get off the ground if you decide to go back to the sofa and watch TV.
