Originally named after a martyred Saint, Valentine’s Day was first named by Pope Gelasius in 496 A.D. Approximately nine hundred years later during the “High Middle Ages” the day became associated with romantic love. Lovers gave presents of sweet treats, handwritten notes and flowers to show affection.
In 1868, Richard Cadbury introduced the first chocolate candy boxed designed specifically for Valentine’s Day and the modern shopping frenzy began in earnest. In modern times couples will give gifts of flowers, candy, evenings out, clothing, perfumes, and even extravagant gifts of jewelry and getaways. In Key West, the island is bustling with couples who have decided a get-away is the best way to celebrate the romantic holiday. The U.S. Census Bureau has even documented the romantic spending-frenzy with a recently released fact sheet documenting the economics for Valentine's Day 2012.
The average U.S. adult spent $102 on gifts and dinners out in 2009 with an increase predicted in 2012. The gift giving might even extend past that special someone in one’s life, to their children, parents, co-workers and even pets. The holiday sounds innocent enough: a day to celebrate love. It has become a pressure filled experience for many, in fact, 53% of woman said they would dump their boyfriend if they do not receive a gift.
To avoid putting undue pressure on yourself and your loved ones, take a deep breath and keep these four points in mind.
- It is just one day. In no way should this summarize the intentions of your special someone. Instead consider the overall efforts being made the other 364 days of the year. If he is kind, generous and loving as a general rule, then he is a keeper.
- It is difficult to be original on this holiday. If it is the third year in a row he has given a heart-shaped box of chocolates, don’t be frustrated. This highly marketed event makes it difficult to be innovative. It is the thought that counts.
- Remember that Valentine’s Day is a day to exchange sentiments. Ladies, be sure to take the time to show love and affection. If your gifts end up being more extravagant or creative than his, don’t worry, it will be a wonderful learning opportunity for him and next year he will aim higher!
- Attraction and compatibility extend well-beyond the material. If you are lucky enough to be in a relationship in which your heart still races and your body tingles - that is gift enough!
