4 killed on Carnival float that caught fire in Brazil during celebration parade

Four people have died after a Carnival float caught fire on Tuesday as reported by Reuters on Feb. 12. It happened in the Brazilian port city of Santos and made for a solemn atmosphere for the last day of the energetic Carnival celebrations throughout Brazil according to police.

Authorities have stated that the float caught fire after it hit a power line during maneuvers while it was participating in the Carnival festivities. This accident comes at a time when public venue and events are coming under severe scrutiny because of what some people believe is the negligent enforcement of fire and safety codes in the country. Last month, a nightclub fire in southern Brazil killed 239 people.

Five people were also injured in the accident. Three of the victims who died were pushing the float. The fourth fatality was a woman watching the parade. It is not known what the condition of the five injured were at this time. The event was suspended by Santos Mayor Paulo Alexandre Barbosa with three more schools still left to parade.
