4 GM cars that won't leave you bankrupt: Chevorlet Malibu (2008-current)

"Like a super Accord, but from GM" - New York Times

The Chevy Malibu? At this point you are either wondering what drug I'm on, or how much I'm getting paid by GM to write this article. Fortunately for you, the answer to both is nothing. I know, the Malibu hasn't been a looker in the past, and hasn't exactly been a benchmark of quality craftsmanship, but the seventh generation Chevy Malibu deserves some serious praise.

Not that it hasn't already garnered it's share of rewards. Named North American Car of the Year in 2008, and almost winning the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in the same year (beaten by it's cousin the Cadillac CTS), the Chevy Malibu was born in the limelight.

So how did Chevy spice up such a bland recipe? They started...well, everywhere. From the chassis to the engine to the tight interior and exterior body work, the 2008 Malibu does just about everything well.

I had a chance to drive a base (LS) Malibu for a week, and I agree with the automotive journalists; the car is far better than any Chevy I have ever ridden in, and rivals the quality and refinement of the Japanese competition. The 169hp base engine was strong enough, and merged admirably onto the highway. The four-speed automatic seemed short a couple of gears, but no matter, simply opt for the LTZ version and you can have a 6-speed automatic. The engine could get a bit whiny, but overall it was smooth as butter. Not bad for a full-size family sedan that costs just over $22,000.

But if you've got a little extra pocket change, I suggest adding some options, as they are far cheaper than the competition. With a V6 engine (252hp), 18" wheels, heated leather seats, and a premium sound system, the Malibu LTZ starts at only $26,600 (including Chevorlet's recent "total cash" discount). Competitors such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry can easily go north of $30k with similar options.

So whether you're hauling a couple of kids around, you're ready to give American cars another chance, or you just like a good deal, take a look at the Chevorlet Malibu. If you're like me, you will be pleasantly surprised.
