Four freshman college students died Tuesday on their way back to school at the Fargo, North Dakota campus, when their car lost control due to the wintry weather and crossed the median on Interstate 94. These four energetic young women had so much life to live, when their life was tragically cut short.
We may, in our frustration, sadness, and lack of understanding become enraged with God for “taking” our loved ones. It may seem so unbelievably cruel that a life or lives were cut short, or other devastating circumstances transpired to loved ones or our self. In a preview for the movie “Rabbit Hole” a mother in a therapy group says: “He (referring to God) had to take her, he needed another angel.” The obviously lead character responds with: “Why didn’t He just make another angel….He’s God after all”. Because we live in human form, there are things that exist that we do not have the ability to understand or discern. We are on a path of growth in our lives. Many times growth can be very painful. Additionally, we may have set up for ourselves certain life lessons to learn, karmic past interactions to heal and grow from, or we may have agreed to place our self in a life where genetic or environmental conditions predetermined an illness surfacing in our life. Any of these explanations could manifest in tragedy that we actually planned, before our birth, to experience, with the purpose of learning and soul growth.
Sometimes, I believe God helps an individual because the possibility for growth is so great in their particular incarnation and life experience, that his or her healing, or being saved is in his or her highest good.
If, however, we do not receive a miraculous healing or saving, we may ponder how to go on, feeling that life has dealt us a “raw deal” or that God forgot us.
Carrying a grievance (even against God) for a prolonged period, however adversely affects the quality of our own life. By carrying a grudge, our energy is focused on the wrong that was done to us and we are weighed down by this negativity of thought. When we engage in negativity in any way, our energy is lowered.
Though we are devastated after a tragedy and need time for grieving, and healing as best we can, we need eventually ask an important question: How do we want to live now, in the aftermath of our injustice or pain? We cannot know the reasons for everything while in human form, but we can choose the response of our life lived. I believe our wisest course of action is to live with trust, have faith, and do our best to live a positive, quality life; knowing deep down, that God is all loving and we are loved.
