What is cooler than watching a lineup of dominoes tumble in snake-like fashion across the floor? How about a display of 4.5million of those bones, fashioned to resemble world famous landmarks, clacking for a jaw-dropping world record? The world record breaking topple on Friday the 13th, November 2009, was set in motion on a Netherland TV show. The domino tumbling designs reflected landmarks that spanned the globe and the toppling ran along an international route from continent to continent.
The Sport of Domino Toppling
Domino toppling is more than a toddler distraction. Domino-Games.com has a host of links on its Domino Toppling Links page that illustrates this point. Click into the Anno Domino 2000 AD2K, to learn about these giant lightweight dominoes that were built and lined up in the Nevada desert for an interactive mega domino toppling 'artplay' in Black Rock City. Or check out the 'Domino Toppling Hobby' link dedicated to the art of domino tumbling. For those needing a weekend project, they can click on the link in that site,‘How to Make a Domino Effect’ for directions for setting up a homemade domino toppling display made from plywood, wood glue, brads, and other building material!
Wikipedia has some history on the domino toppling event, called 'Domino Day', and a list of the world record numbers. The list starts December 27, 1986 when 755,836 toppled successfully out of 1,250,000.
Amazon.com has a host of items for sale that are perfect for the domino toppling amateur who wants to learn how to build some amazing domino designs. Check them out here.
Domino toppling is an annual event, so domino toppling fans can look forward to some number greater than this year’s record of 4.5million next year! Watch for it!
