Tuesday morning a 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit the greater Los Angeles area. The earthquake was centered 11 miles east-southeast of the Los Angeles Civic Center, according to the US Geological Survey website.
There are no reports of injuries or power outages, but the California Highway Patrol reported a buckled 10-foot stretch of I-5 southbound immediately after the quake. Works crews are already working to repair the damage stretch of I-5. The earthquake jolted people awake just after 4 am Tuesday morning.
The 4.4-magnitude earthquake is considered small in terms of massive earthquakes that are over an 8 in magnitude, but it was still felt over a large area of Los Angeles. People from San Bernardino County to Santa Monica reported they felt it, but people in Southern California say they are used to it.
About 700 earthquakes occur in the state of Utah every year. The largest earthquake in Utah was in 1934 in Hansel Valley, just north of the Great Salt Lake and was a 6.6-magnitude quake, according to seis.utah.edu.
