The University Community plan to spare land on the La Jolla Comons for residences did not last past Monday. City councilmembers approve the developer's zone change to a zone for an office building or a hotel.
Multi-use village construction in the La Jolla community north of la Jolla Village Drive will develop on separate cuts of the valuable land. The city council approved a plan to build 1,200 residences in the aurrounding area after the commons project was first approved in 2000. A loss of 86 residential units that the developer could have built on the land off Executive Drive is not considered by the city a thinning out of the residential building plan in the north city community.
Adding office spaces and commercial space will count for increasing employment opportunities inthe area designated a major employment area in the city's general plan.
The rezone gives the developer an oppportunity to offer businesses office spaces originally planned before a 2006 council decision lowered the office building at the site, and more than doubled the original 115 residences count.
Building the last of three office buildings at La Jolla Commons finishes a plan to increase mixed-use development in an urban core in the University Town Center area. A 15 story office building over 600 feet tall fits on the third lot. THe La Jolla COmmons developer has the option to build an 11 story hotel onthe lot, or, a building built for both office and hotel space.
