3RD Annual Wines Around the World: Morrisville Rotary Club event

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a fund raising event held by the Morrisville (NC) Rotary Club. The event, benefiting local charities, held at the RDU – General Aviation Terminal, featured wines from Australia, Spain, California, Italy, Argentina and France.

The Wine Merchant, who did a fantastic job presenting each wine, provided the wines for the event. Although I did not sample every wine that evening, I did make some tasting notes on the following outstanding wines. First up was the Annalisa Pinot Grigio, 2010, from Veneto, Italy. It was crisp, fresh and lively, with balanced fruit and acidity. Aromas of peach and green apple on the nose, with nice minerality on the finish. An excellent wine to enjoy with lighter dishes and salads. Next was a Rose’ from Gascogne, France – San De Guilhem Rose’, 2009 vintage. Wonderfully dry, with aromas of red fruit and stone. Well balanced, with a crisp and refreshing finish. A very food friendly wine, enjoyed with a variety of gourmet food offerings at the event. Lastly, a Rioja from Spain – Vina Izadi Reserva, 2006 vintage. This medium-bodied Tempranillo had powerful aromas and flavors of dark fruit, herbaceousness, and leather, with notes of toast and wood on the finish. A great pairing with most red-meat dishes, heavier pasta meals and rustic cheese plates.

In addition to the wines, local restaurants provided very tasty food treats. Vino Ristorante & Pizzeria, in Morrisville, was just one of the many restaurants on hand, offering excellent food and service to the large crowd of event goers. Live music was provided by soul-jazz saxophonist Peter Jordan, who gave us a most appropriate soundtrack for an evening of wine tasting and enjoying gourmet nibbles.

The event concluded with an exciting raffle and door prize presentation, with all proceeds going to local charities. I felt fortunate to be a part of this amazing event, and everyone in attendance, I believe, felt the same way. The Rotary Club of Morrisville and The Wine Merchant did an outstanding job for their local charities.
