This marks the third year that the Presidents Day geocaching tour is taking place in the Space Coast of Florida. Last year, fun was had by all as it was held at the Historic Sams site in Merritt Island. Geocachers were able to walk the historic trails and learn about the ancient Indians and pioneers that lived in the area.
This year the geocaching tour will be held at the Manatee Sanctuary Park in Cape Canaveral Florida. Lots of history themed geocachers to be logged for the area For more info on this event visit the 3rd Annual Presidents Day Geocaching Tour
Charge up your GPS (Global Positioning System) and prepare for adventure in the great outdoors with this popular hobby of geocaching. This virtual treasure hunt incorporates the use of finding Geocaches, a waterproof container with small items inside. These geocaches are hidden from view typically in shrubs and trees or underneath outdoor structures like boardwalks. Inside the cache can be found a paper log available for signing and a range of small trading items such as medallions, pins, laminated pictures on the history of the location, and trackables. People from all backgrounds can enjoy this hobby with their families.
Those new to geocaching will start by visiting the official site for Geocaching to learn about this hobby. Here you can find caches that are in your zip code. Once you are outdoors, use your GPS unity to find your first geocache. Open it and you will find the log which you can sign and leave a comment like "Found my first geocache on Presidents Day". Reseal the cache and put it back where you found it. Later when you get back to your home computer you can go back to geocaching online and make a log entry from that geocache site that you found it and make other comments.
If you are a veteran geocacher - you know the groundwork - on the days before Presidents Day consider planting a new geocache, themed around a President or historical point of interest. A day or two prior to Monday the 18th will permit the First to Find (FTF) to log in on this day. Make the new site interesting and add some small pictures of your chosen President and include some information about that President on the geocache listing.
A travel bug is a dog tag size plate that has a unique code for tracking its movement across many geographical locations. It Interfaces with various mapping program such as Yahoo and Google Earth enabling one to map and follow it on it's journey as it is picked up and moved by one goecacher to another. Although there are many themes it is suggested for
the Presidents Day Geocaching Tour that one be iniated with a particular President with its final mission to end at the Presidential museum commerating that President. Example is the Send President Harding Home Travel Bug. The mission of travel bug which has a laminated picture of President Harding is to end up at the Harding Museum in Warren Ohio. This travel bug educates and get an appreciation of Presidential history for all the people who come in contact with it.
