The 38th Annual Belmar Five was held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 in the ocean front borough of Belmar, New Jersey.
It was a beautiful morning with not a cloud in the sky, little wind but on the warm side with temperatures in the 80’s with humidity. The combination of the heart, sun and humidity made for some challenging conditions for the runners.
The 8:30 a.m..start was on the north end of Ocean Avenue near the draw bridge going into Avon. The runners were lined up and after the National Anthem Race Director; Phil Hinck of Monmouth Beach gave the start signal to the wheel chair racers. Five minutes later the runners were given the same command by Mr. Hinck. The huge field of 2500 runners made their way south toward Spring Lake and then back onto Ocean Avenue heading north to the lake between 5th and 6th Avenues where throngs of spectators lined the street to cheer on the runners. From thee they ran around the lake and to a finish on the north side of the lake. “Chicki” Ebers was there playing his drums giving the runners a last minute encouragement as they crossed the finish line.
Coming in first overall and for the men was Cameron Marantz of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, finishing in 25:02. He was followed right behind by Alfredo Santana also of Philadelphia in a time of 25:03. The two exchanged the lead several times over the course of the five miles and raced to the finish. Coming in third was Alan Ereket of New Haven, Connecticut, in a time of 25:24.
For the women it was Sarah Cummings of New York City, New York, in a time of 27:44. Sarah essentially led from start to finish. She was followed by Gidey Tinbut of New Haven, Connecticut in 29:20 and then Corine Fitzgerald of Rockaway, New Jersey in 29:31.
After the race awards were presented at the large gazebo by the lake to overall and age group winners.
On Friday evening before the race Kid’s Races for various ages were held along the side of the lake. Several hundred kids participated in the races and were then treated to fireworks on the beach. Photos of Kid’s Races.
The race was part of the Jersey Shore Grand Prix Series of races. Next up in the series is the Asbury Park 5K on August 9, 2014.
