Looking for that last minute getaway fare to Mexico perhaps?
Well, during my last couple of business trips out of LAX, I noted that there is a new airline operating out of Terminal 2. The airline is Volaris, a low cost carrier based out of the city of Toluca, Mexico. Originally starting domestic service within Mexico in March 2006, this relatively new airline now has operations in the U. S., specifically with service out of San Francisco International and LAX.
From LAX, Volaris offers non-stop service to Guadalajara, Zacatecas, Morelia and Toluca Mexico with connections to other destinations such as Merida and Cancun. Actually, flying into Toluca is another option to consider if you have a need to travel to Mexico City. The Aeropuerto Internacional de Toluca is only about 30 miles from Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport, which makes for easier, less congested travel, and in most instances, cheaper air fares.
With its 3 year old fleet of Airbus A319 and A320's, there is a fire sale with really, really low fares.
The following is a sampling of one way fares (plus taxes and fees) for December 2009 and January 2010:
- LAX - Guadalajara (GDL): $124
- LAX - Zacatecas (ZCL): $37
- LAX - Morelia (MLM): $32
- LAX - Toluca (TLC): $47
Soon, there will also be non-stop service from LAX to Monterrey Mexico.
Already with plans for expansion, Volaris has teamed up with Southwest Airlines and announced that a code-share agreement is in place with them. New itineraries are to be revealed in 2010.
