343 firefighters was the exact number of heroes who lost their lives on that tragic morning 12 years ago, and a large group of firefighters across the nation are paying their respects to the 9/11 heroes and honoring the fallen New York victims who died on September 11, 2001, this week. Known as the 9/11 Memorial climb, the band of firefighters will scale 110 stories in memory of those who were killed, News10 reports this Wednesday, Sept. 11.
The 343 firefighters’ tribute is a fitting and emotional one for many of these public heroes. On that shocking and haunting day, 343 New York firefighters that died on the line of duty were forced to climb 110 stories in full gear. This morning, dozens of firefighters in and around Sacramento are climbing up the Renaissance Tower in their memory.
The Renaissance Tower may only stand 28 stories, but the firefighters who lost their brothers, no matter how far away or how long ago, will be traveling up and down the staircase a full four times in order to accomplish the 110 stories needed for the tribute.
The homage, says the Sacramento Fire Department, is one made to respect the 9/11 heroes who lost their lives that day, and to truly never forget their ultimate sacrifice. The department is expecting 343 firefighter participants for the event. The firefighters in the past have carried names of a fallen fellow firefighter on their backs, and when they would make it to the top of the Renaissance Tower, would ring a bell in honor and memorial of the 9/11 firefighters themselves.
All of the firefighters in the 9/11 Memorial Climb are also donating $25 in order to raise funds for the FDNY Widows and Children’s Fund. What's more, many of these climbs are completed by firefighters throughout the U.S. nation this week, making the act all the more unifying.
