343 firefighters climb 110 stories in memory of their 9/11 fallen comrades each year on this anniversary date. The number 343 is significant as that’s the number of NYC firefighters lost in the 9/11 terrorist attack, according to ABC local on Sept 11.
Out of respect, memory and just because they miss these men and women who paid the ultimate price on 9/11 in 2001, these folks pile on their full gear and make this somber climb, each year. This group of 343 firefighters each carry a name of one of their fallen brothers or sisters from that tragic event.
The firefighters climb the Renaissance Tower, which is only 28 stories, but this group goes up and down the staircases four times to reach 110 stories.
On 9/11 firefighters had to climb 110 stories in full gear for the rescue they were attempting, but 343 of them didn’t make it out of the building. Once the NYC 343 firefighters reach the top of the Renaissance building for the final time they ring a bell and have a small ceremony, as part of this annual event.
The firefighters come from all over the NYC area to participate in this climb. In Sacramento, firefighters are doing the same thing. The firefighters joining in on the climb each donated $25 a piece and that money goes to the FDNY Widows and Children’s Fund. Last Sunday there were two runs for 9/11, a 5k and a 10k.
