The 31st Annual Run thru Deal was held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 in the borough of Deal, N.J. bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
The day was windy but sunny with moderate temperatures in the mid to upper 50’s. There was a spirited field for both the one mile and 5k events.
The One Mile Race started at 10 a.m. and the participants lined up on Ocean Avenue in front of the Deal Casino led by the Deal Fire Company fire truck and a Deal Police motorcycle. They made their way north along Ocean Avenue and then returned for a finish at the Deal Casino.
Coming in first for the boys was Nolan Kus of Jackson, N.J. in a time of 6:30 – Nolan also ran the 5k and won his age group there. He was followed by his brother Gavin in a time of 7:14. For the girls the top finisher was Alex Haugh of Lincroft in 7:51 followed by Loretta Fisher of Ocean in 10:16.

The 5k race started at 11 a.m. The runners again lined up on Ocean Avenue and after playing of the National Anthem took off heading north and made their way around the borough’s tree lined streets, stately homes and ocean front and returned back to a finish at the Deal Casino.
Coming in first overall and for the men was Scott Sarno of Barnegat in a time of 17:11. He was followed by Greg Kuczyski of Saryville in 17:29. For the women breaking the tape first was Sophia Barnellin of Brooklyn, N.Y. in a time of 21:11. She was followed by Elana Anastasia of Oakhurst in 24:09.
Other age group winners included: Nolan Kus of Jackson in 23:21; Kate Apostolacus in 31;41; Wyatt Knipp in 23:28; Natalie Fisher of Ocean in 27:50; John Laugh of Lincroft in 19:19; Gabrielle Tankovich of Point Pleaant in 25:11; Ken Krupac of Lake Como in 18:06; Holly McGovern of Ocean Grove in 25:18; Pat Ford of Neptune City in 18:12; Laurie Nolan of Neptune City in 24:14; Tom Kuczynski of Sayrville in 22:06; Barbara Kuckynski of Sayreville in 30:07; Ollie Nelson of Farmingdale in 22:06; Joe Benedicto of Millstone in 51;47. The first Race Walker was Fred Linkhardt of Oakhurst in 32:24.
After the race awards were presented by Race Director Steve Foley to the top finishers and age group winners by Race Director, Steve Foley of Ocean, N.J. Steve also thanked the many volunteers, sponsors and groups including the Jersey Shore Running Club who made the event possible.
Participants then stayed for a post race party on the grounds of the Deal Casino where they enjoyed a barbecue along with beer and soda.
