The 31st Festival International de Jazz de Montreal kicked off last night with a rocking good time with The Brian Setzer Orchestra on the biggest outdoor stage in Place des Festivals at the corner of de Maisonneuve blvd. In true festival tradition, the streets were teeming with people, estimated in the six digit range, who overflowed from Place des Festivals and on to Ste-Catherine street. Setzer himself estimated the crowd size, “They told me one or two hundred people would be here, one or two hundred thousand people!”
Music lovers came from all over to create a mix of locals and tourists. One man came from Germany after a friend told him Brian Setzer was opening the fest, he was immediately on a plane.
With six outdoor stages putting on free concerts, and several indoor venues with ticketed shows, there is something for everyone at any given time of the festival, which is on until July 6th. The Festival concludes this year with a New Orleans style parade followed by a performance by the Soul Rebels Brass Band with other guests.
