Alternative rockers 311 will embark on another Caribbean Cruise when they take to the high seas on March 1st.
As a means of shaking off the dust, the band opted to play two special, intimate shows at the Roxy this past weekend. It's important to note that prior to Saturday night's show, 311 hadn't played at the Roxy in 19 years. That's a LONG time, and it was clear that both fans and the band relished in the opportunity to get up close and personal.
Over the course of the two shows, 311 played two entirely different set lists - that means no repeats (something that sets hardcore 311 fans alight with excitement). In all, they treated their hardcore fans to 50 different songs over the 2 sets.
Sure, the hits were there - 'Flowing', 'All Mixed Up', 'Down', 'Creatures (For a While)', 'Amber', 'Sunset in July', 'Beautiful Disaster', and the like - but the real gems of the shows were more seldom-played songs such as 'Strangers', 'Continuous Life', 'Grassroots' 'Stealing Happy Hours', 'Random', '8:16 AM', and more.
Musically, 311 couldn't have sounded any more perfect. Chad Sexton's snares whipped with precision, Tim Mahoney's guitar tone was crisp and electric, Nick Hexum and S.A. Martinez's vocals matched off each other solidly, and Aaron "P-Nut" Wills' bass was as thumping and crunchy as you could hope for.
The band hadn't played a live show since last fall, but there was definitely no "rust" on their well-oiled machine - rather, they honestly turned in two of the best shows this reviewer has ever seen them play.
If you're headed out on the 311 Caribbean Cruise 2013 - have fun - but if not, stay tuned, because if history serves as any indicator, 311 will again hit the road this summer for its yearly Unity Tour.
