I dare anyone to place Ezra Furman into any existing musical category. I issue this dare because when you listen to Furman’s music, especially his latest record Day Of The Dog, the style changes from song to song. He is able to create an album that keeps listeners guessing what is next while keeping a sense of continuity throughout the record.
The record pulls elements from a wide range of musical influences. While guitar riffs rule the day pianos and horns unexpectedly find their way into the songs and are a welcome addition. The opening track “I Wanna Destroy Myself” is a fast paced ditty with Furman’s raspy wail at the forefront. Blistering guitars meander in and out of the tune working with the pounding drums to set the pace and if you listen closely a distorted sax lends support. Gears are shifted on “Tell Em All To Go To Hell”, “Cherry Lane” and “Cold Hands”. “Hell” shows a rock-a-billy side to Furman’s music, “Cherry” employs castanets lending a bit of Latin flare and “Hands” utilizes a boogie woogie piano to give it a nice classic groove. He channels the spirit of Neil Young on “Day Of The Dog”, dishes out a mighty fine pop tune with "My Zero" and my personal favorite “Slacker Adria” has a classic feel. With jangly guitars and the right amount of fuzz it sounds like a track off one of the Nuggets compilations.
Day of The Dog is one of my favorite albums of 2013. It never gets stale while treating your ears to a plethora of sounds and styles while Furman displays how talented of a songwriter and singer he can be. His willingness to wander in and out of different styles of music is part of what makes his work so easy to listen to. The album keeps its originality while dishing out tunes that sound familiar and making the listener comfortable as they enter Furman’s musical world. If you want music that knows no boundaries then give this record a listen.
