Number 24 - Dorado - Anger, Hunger, Love and the Fear of Death

2013 has seen a plethora of good music, unfortunately most of it you have to go find. Sitting at #24 is a band you will not hear on the radio or pushed down your throat like much of the crap you see/hear on TV. The guys of Dorado have an original batch of tunes that is like nothing you have heard before.

The Birmingham band Dorado is a concoction that was birthed from the cranium of Mr. Jody Nelson (Through The Sparks). A long time stalwart of the B’ham music scene Nelson assembled a team of musicians consisting of almost everybody in town to deliver Anger, Hunger, Love and Fear of Death (Anger), which may be one of the most original albums of the year.

I have been listening to Anger for quite a while and each time I have sat down to write about this record I have had to tear it up and start over. (There really is no tearing, I just hit delete.) Why has it been so difficult you ask? Well I will tell you. Anger gives you a totally different listen with every play. Listen to it once and the spacey synthesizer sounds burst into your brain and dominate the record. You play it a little while later and the underlying country twang makes you happy. Another play and guitars deliver a 70’s rock vibe to the record. I could go on and on about the multiple layers Nelson and crew have so eloquently crammed into the masterful record but all I need to say is that it is damn good.

From the opening instrumental title track which takes the listener in every direction to the fade out of the jangly “Birds Of Paradise”, Anger takes you on a musical journey that you will not want to end. With songs like “Die Trying” delivering an indie rock vibe, the countyfied “Wall Brains" and the chaotic “Mother” the sounds bounce all over the place but all strive to reach the same place on their musical journey. My personal favorites have to be “At a Bar Near the End of the World” which takes on a Pink Floyd feel and the 6+ minute opus “Black Buddha of the Onionverse”. I am not sure what the hell an “onionverse” is, but after listening to this track a few times I want in.

Albert Einstein once said “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination”, after listening to the songs on Anger there is no doubt Jody Nelson possesses a mighty big imagination. If you are looking for cookie cutter radio friendly music then this may not be for you, but if you dig bands that step outside of the box to deliver something original then you need to check this album out.
