Number 3 - John Moreland - In The Throes

The last three records of 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013 can almost be interchangeable. All three are damn fine pieces of music loaded with great songs. Today is Number 3 and sitting there is John Moreland with his record In The Throes.

A deep burley voice seeps from the speakers introducing the listener to the latest musical output from Oklahoma’s John Moreland. One of the better songwriters many people have never heard of, Moreland has honed his craft through the years with a mix of rockers and ballads but on In The Throes he may have hit his stride. Sparse melodies frame his soulful voice as he sings about a myriad of subjects we all know too well.

From the subtle opening to the final fade out this record never once wanes from its excellence. Moreland writes songs from the heart that are deep and introspective allowing the listener to relate to what he has to say. On “I Need You To Tell Me Who I Am” he sings of a man who has lost his way and reaches out to loved ones to help him find out who he is. Lamenting about a relationship that was bad to the core he questions why he stuck around on “Your Spell” and remembering an old love in “Oh Julia” he sings about having to let her go until she handles her issues. Lost love seems to be a recurring theme in many of his songs but not all of them. You can feel his angst and restlessness in “3:59 AM” and a passive anger towards his music career rises to the top in “Nobody Gives A Damn About Songs Anymore”. With each play a different song becomes my favorite. Listening to his words is mesmerizing and in some way cathartic especially on the track “God’s Medicine” as he contemplates life, death, love and a wealth of other things. By far it may be the best written song on the record.

Albums come and go, most leave a dent and once people are through listening they fade into the past to be replaced by the next one. Every so often a record comes along that ingrains itself into the listener’s head keeping them coming back to it over and over again. (I still have records from when I was younger that I listen to more than once a month.) In The Throes is one of these albums. It will never become dated it will never get old it will stay with you even when you are not listening to it. That is why you need to introduce yourself to the music of John Moreland.
